Community Profile

Chapel Hill is a large, progressive city that makes up one of the three corners of the Research Triangle, along with Raleigh and Durham. It is known throughout the world as the home of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the nation’s oldest public university and one of the best in academics and affordability. With a growing population of nearly 60,000, Chapel Hill is home to world class arts, culture and business, while maintaining small-town charm. Chapel Hill was settled in 1753 by William Barbee of Middlesex County, Virginia. The center of Chapel Hill was the small Anglican New Hope Chapel, on the site now occupied by the historic Carolina Inn. UNC Chapel Hill was established in 1789 and a town was founded to serve the university, with the name Chapel Hill officially chartered in 1851 and its main road, Franklin Street, named after Benjamin Franklin. In 1968, one year after schools were fully integrated, Chapel Hill became the first predominantly white municipality in the South to elect an African American mayor, Howard Lee.

 

Attractions near Chapel Hill include Research Triangle Park, the North Carolina Botanical Garden, the Morehead Planetarium, Ackland Art Museum and Carolina Performing Arts. Duke University is in nearby Durham and North Carolina State University is in Raleigh.

 

Pittsboro is a picturesque rural community in central North Carolina serving as the county seat of Chatham County. It is perfectly situated just 17 miles southwest of Chapel Hill, 31 miles southwest of Durham, 34 miles west of Raleigh and 37 miles east of Asheboro. With a population of about 4,000, Pittsboro boasts small town living with a convenient proximity to business centers and larger cities. It is home to Chatham Park, a 7,000-acre Planned Development District with 22,000 planned residential units and 22 million square feet of diverse business, healthcare, retail, entertainment, and green space.

Raleigh-Durham International Airport is approximately 17 miles from Chapel and 30 miles from Pittsboro.
